The world of work is transforming, with organizations grappling with the challenges of an evolving business landscape. Amidst these changes, employee experience stands out as a critical driver of success.

Gallup’s State of the Global Workplace 2023 Report reveals a concerning reality for Kenyan businesses: 83% of respondents are disengaged and detached from their workplace.

Thriving: These employees find their work meaningful and feel connected to the team and organization. They take pride in their work and take ownership of their performance, often going the extra mile for teammates and customers.

Quiet quitting: These employees are filling a seat and watching the clock. They put in minimal effort and are psychologically disconnected from their employer. They feel lost and disconnected from their workplace.

Loud quitting: These employees take actions that directly harm the organization, undercutting its goals and opposing its leaders. At some point, the trust between employee and employer was severely broken.

Kenya’s engagement level of 17% falls below the global and sub-Saharan African averages. However, this is an opportunity for organizations to boost engagement and reshape the employee experience. A few changes could turn disengaged employees into productive team members:

  1. Fairness in remuneration: Ensure you’re paying your employees on time and that their salaries and benefits are proportional to their qualifications and contributions to your organization’s success.
  2. Foster a positive work culture: Cultivate an environment that values open communication, collaboration, and employee well-being. Encourage constructive feedback, recognize achievements, and promote a healthy work-life balance.
  3. Empowerment through professional growth: Provide opportunities for learning and development, allowing employees to acquire new skills and progress in their careers. This enhances job satisfaction and demonstrates a commitment to employee growth.
  4. Transparent leadership and purpose: Clearly articulate your organization’s mission, vision, and values. Leaders should lead by example, demonstrating transparency, trustworthiness, and a shared sense of purpose, fostering alignment and engagement throughout the workforce.
  5. Regular feedback and recognition: Implement routine feedback mechanisms that provide constructive insights into employee performance. Recognize and reward achievements promptly, fostering a culture of appreciation and motivation.
  6. Well-being: Prioritize employee well-being by offering wellness programs, flexible work arrangements, and resources to manage stress. Promote a healthy work-life integration to enhance productivity and overall happiness.

Organizations can’t overlook the importance of employee experience management. The Gallup survey highlights the pressing need for businesses to prioritize engagement, improve the employee experience, and reverse the tide of disengagement.

Creating a thriving work environment requires a comprehensive approach to employee experience management. It encompasses providing employees with the necessary resources, supportive management, and a sense of purpose. When employees feel psychologically present, understand their role, and have a supportive work environment, they can truly contribute to their fullest potential.
